The John Kinkel House has stood in Bedford Village, New York, since around 1872. Now on the market for the first time in more than 50 years, the four-bedroom house retains wide-plank floors, period millwork and tall bay windows. It is currently listed with Esteban Gomez of Compass for $1.75 million.

Its Second Empire architecture is most apparent from the street, where a mansard roof, arched dormers and decorative brackets rise above a deep front porch. Inside, fireplaces anchor the main rooms, with windows looking onto mature trees.

The house takes its name from John Adams Kinkel, known locally as ‘Mr Bedford’, who served the town for nearly seven decades in roles including constable, highway superintendent and its first fire chief. Novelist Sloan Wilson, author of The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, later lived here.

Beyond the house is a detached artist’s studio. Its barn-like form contains a double-height workspace with exposed timber structure, a loft and a wall of multi-paned glazing opening toward the garden. The 3,977sqft property has four bedrooms and three bathrooms and is located near Bedford Village Green.
