A creek and nature reserve run behind this old Queenslander in Bangalow, in the hinterland of Byron Bay on Australia’s east coast. Known as Gypsy Creek, the three-bedroom house has been renovated by English-born, Byron-based interior designer Louella Boitel-Gill. Its weatherboard exterior gives way to rooms with timber floors, panelled walls and a central fireplace. In the kitchen, timber cabinetry extends beneath windows looking into the garden, and sections of exposed framing remain visible between the living spaces.

Covered decks open from the back of the house into tropical gardens planted with mature trees and tree ferns. Beyond the garden is the reserve and creek. A detached studio with its own WC and covered deck occupies another part of the 569sqm site. Each of the house’s three bedrooms has access to a bathroom.

Only a minute by foot from Bangalow village, the house has previously appeared in the Design Files, Natalie Walton’s Home by the Sea and Deborah Bibby’s The Originals. Currently, it is listed with Byron Bay Sotheby’s International Realty, with the price available on request.
