Built in 1948 by civil engineer Robert A Johnson, the eponymous RA Johnson Residence in the fabled Los Angeles neighbourhood of Elysian Heights was shaped over decades as Johnson and his wife Helena transformed a steep canyon site into a series of terraces, gardens and creative spaces.

The three-bedroom house spans 1,257 square feet across two adjoining parcels totalling more than 26,000 square feet. Original woodwork, exposed beams, custom cabinetry and a fireplace remain throughout the interiors, while large windows frame the surrounding canyon and mature trees.

Beyond the house, the couple constructed reinforced stone terraces to stabilise the hillside and support extensive planting. Winding pathways, mosaic stonework, two water features, a tiled amphitheatre, a detached studio and a hillside treehouse all form part of the landscape they gradually created.

The property has passed through only a handful of owners, including an artist, composer, filmmaker and photographer, helping preserve much of its original character. The neighbouring land is also recognised as the birthplace of the Sierra Club, adding another layer to the area’s history.

Creative house-hunters will be interested to learn that the RA Johnson Residence is on the market through Modern California House for US$1.35 million.
