Tirana: truly a diamond in the rough. This diverse, artistic, & multiethnic city underwent a massive transformation when current Albanian prime minister Edi Rama, formerly a painter of international acclaim, decided to revitalize the capital by painting over dilapidated communist-era buildings. With or without it, the neighbourhoods breathe charisma. Tirana is everything funky + subversive — a living personality felt on the streets and beneath, from art installations in bunkers to places like Radio Bar, a secluded speakeasy and garden decorated with old radio paraphernalia. (Bonus: Internet cafes staffed with bouncers.) The city is imbued with this infectious laidback quality — a feeling of permanent Sundays spent navigating the mirage of origami textures & colours.
