A Connecticut island that once hosted Marilyn Monroe and Barbra Streisand is for sale.

Tavern Island covers 3.5 acres, and comes with a six-bedroom English Colonial-style property. Built in the 1930s, it was home to Broadway lyricist Billy Rose in the 1960s, whose parties were frequented by a Hollywood royalty.

The 6,116 sq ft island home features beamed and wood-panelled rooms, with big windows framing views of the water.

Also on the island is a guest cottage dubbed The Pilot House – which has two bedrooms, a kitchen and living room – and a boathouse which has been turned into a large games room with a bedroom. A Japanese Tea House and swimming pool round off the pack.

Surprisingly, the island is only an hour and a half from Midtown Manhattan. As well as extensively landscaped grounds, it has a deep-water harbour for launching yachts and boats.

Privacy like this doesn’t come cheap though – Tavern Island is on the market via the Higgins Group, an affiliate of Christie’s Real Estate, for just under $11m.

If you finally get tired of your own company, the island is an eight-minute boat ride to the mainland of Norwalk, and close to the fishing village of Rowayton.
