A Welsh island comes up for rent at £500 a month

A tidal island off the coast of Wales’ Snowdonia is up for rent at the bargain price of £500 per month.

It comes with a catch, however. Would-be tenants of the island – named Ynys Giftan and located in the Dwyryd Estuary – must invest in the renovation of its period farmhouse.

The home and the numerous outbuildings that pepper the 17.74 acre parcel of land are in need of repair. The rent, however, is negotiable. It can vary over the course of the lease, which extends to 20 years, depending on the applicant’s level of investment.

Ynys Giftan is a rocky, uninhabited island accessible only by boat during high tide. It has ‘so much potential’ according to Thomas Hanmer of Strutt & Parker. ‘The farmhouse, outbuildings and 17.74 acres allows a prospective tenant to put their own stamp on the island; either to create a secret escape just for themselves or the possibility of a commercial enterprise,’ he adds

The estate of Lord Harlech has owned the island since the 1700s, when it was given as a gift by Queen Anne, hence the name, which means Anne’s Gift Island. It is looking for a tenant who will be able to maximise tourism.

Accessible by foot via a public footpath during low tide, Ynys Giftan features an open hill, woodland and beaches. It is surrounded by the sands of the estuary on all sides and looks across at the Italian-style village of Portmeirion, as well as the tidal flats of Traeth Bach and the majestic snow-capped mountains of Snowdonia.
