The Delorean Motor Company is known for its futuristic vehicle designs but its 2040 Omega off-road racer looks more suited to life on Mars than Earth.

Inspired by Baja-themed off-road racing, the 2040 Omega concept car ditches the silhouette of its iconic DMC 12 classic, opting for an extreme lifted stance and giant wheels that look ready to rip up rough terrain.

The brand’s go-to gull-wing doors get a twist, integrated into an almost seamless sweeping shell that appears to have no side windows.

Last weekend, DMC unveiled the ultra-futuristic Omega 2040 at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, alongside its more conventional Alpha5 electric concept car. The brand says the Omega represents a ‘complete departure from traditional automotive design’.

The vehicle – which will not head to production – has fans of the classic DeLorean split right down the middle. But as departures go, it’s a pretty radical shift that’s definitely got tongues wagging.
