Midcentury modern classic, Edris House, designed by E Stewart Williams in Palm Springs

America’s obsession with midcentury design could finally be waning, new research from Google Trends and furniture brand Joybird suggests.

Using Google Trends data report, Joybird cross-checked 16 categories of design searched for over the last 12 months and ranked them by popularity per state. Victorian design came out in top in 10 of the country’s 50 states, while midcentury modernism was favourite in just two (and no, one of them wasn’t California).

In second place was ‘Bohemian’ – a surprising hit in Alaska – while contemporary, industrial and so-called shabby-chic trends also proved alluring.

Rustic came bottom of the style pile, failing to rank as the number one design trend in any state.
