A disused steel warehouse in Copenhagen will become an Italian ‘food temple’ comprising a café, delicatessen and market.

Italian brand Supermarco, in collaboration with Ello Foods, plans to open its new store in November, taking over the 10,800 sq ft Specialstålhallen (‘special steel hall’) in the city’s Teglholmen area.

‘We’ve got a great opportunity to move into a building that resembles a palace,’ Supermarco’s project manager Karsten Brinkmann told Copenhagen news site AOK.

Conversion plans by DesignGroup Architects include retaining the temple-like facade of the former steel storage unit, built in 1925, with the addition of a new glass frontage.

Teglholmen, a peninsula in the industrial Sydhavnen region of Copenhagen, has been earmarked for regeneration with 1,350 new homes expected for completion by the end of 2016. Residents can sample a little taste of Italy when they move in.
