Bromley Caldari Architects have transformed a building rooftop in New York into an urban farm.
More than 450 tonnes of soil were needed to cover the 42,000 sq ft space in Queens, making it one of the largest rooftop farms in the world.
The project is part of a wider $10 million development by Acumen Capital Partners and Brooklyn Grange to convert a 300,000 sq ft factory – constructed in 1919 – into an environmentally friendly workspace for creative companies.
Inside the building, Bromley Caldari Architects have fitted energy-efficient lighting and windows as well as low-consumption bathroom fixtures. Referencing its past as a car part manufacturing plant, concrete floors and touches of stainless steel have been used throughout the space.
And for employees wanting to take five, the rooftop farm provides a relaxing oasis away from the bustle of New York life.
