Once an abandoned building, this 500-year-old mansion has been transformed into the Can Bordoy Grand House & Garden Hotel – and the focus is very much on its lush outdoor space.

Everything about Can Bordoy has been designed to feel like stepping into a home rather than a hotel. Instead of a check-in desk, guests are met in the entrance hall, and in place of a restaurant, there’s a shared dining room.

The lived-in feeling is added to by the hotel’s collection of vintage chairs, retro minibars and squashy sofas, which contrast some of the building’s existing historic elements. Things are still polished in the hotel’s 24 rooms, however, where long velvet drapes conceal freestanding baths, and beds sit beneath crystal chandeliers.

Can Bordoy’s best part is still its garden – evidently the largest of its kind in the Old Quarter – where trees and greenery fringe the outdoor swimming pool.
