Inside Esteban Rodriguez-Castells and Rafael Fernandez Ruenes’s opulently appointed Art Deco landmark the Bacardi Building. . Originally designed to be the headquarters of the Bacardi Rum company, the building was constructed in 300 days and draws on elements of Catalan Modernism, popular in Europe at the time. At 144 ft, it was also the tallest building in Havana at the time of its completion (and for a long time afterwards) and has interiors decorated with pink Bavarian granite, green marble from Italy and golden marbles from Sweden, Norway, France, Belgium and Hungary. . The building was nationalised by Castro after the Bacardi family’s Cuban assets were seized in October 1960 following the revolution the year earlier. . Like most building in Havana, it languished during the late 20th century but was refurbished in 2003 by the Office of the City Historian of Havana, which polished its gilded bones. . It’s still considered one of the most beautiful Art Deco buildings in Latin America and is primarily used as an office building today, but you can go inside the lower floors and grab a coffee from its east wing cafe. .
