If you’re looking for solitude and don’t mind the cold, this 63.7-acre uninhabited Scottish island off the Shetland coast could be for you.

Linga is next to Vaila Sound, West Mainland, and has been empty since 1934. Temperatures on the subarctic island range from around 3.9C in January to a mild 12.4C in August.

It is now on the market via Vladi Private Islands for £250,000, and the sale includes two dilapidated cottages which present an ambitious renovation challenge. Planning permission has been granted to revive the ruins and build a new family home.

The Shetland archipelago comprises around 300 islands and skerries, though only 16 of them are inhabited. For those worried about feeling a bit too alone, Linga is just 500-metres from the town of Walls on the West Mainland – reachable via boat. (You’ll need to supply your own to get there).

Flights run regularly between Lerwick and both Glasgow and Edinburgh, and Linga is accessible all year round.

Additional planning permission has been granted to build a pier, as well as storage and agricultural sheds, and a windmill to harness wind and solar power on the island.
