Colour and shape are high on the menu at Victoria coffee shop Hey Happy designed by Bidgood + Co.

The Canadian studio was tapped to expand the existing outpost into the shop next door, doubling Hey Happy’s size to 1150 sq f while respecting the Market Square building’s historic redbrick structure.

‘Inspiration came in part from pop art – bold colours, curved shapes and elevated everyday materials’, says Bidgood + Co principal Kayla Bidgood.

Curved arches have been cut out of the brick wall between the two stores to visually connect them – a motif that continues via curved maple seating and tables fabricated by Strong Construction Group, as well as rounded light fixtures and tiling.

Informal bleacher seating offer a more casual conversation spot, while sheetgood flooring and painted corrugated metal wall coverings inject an industrial feel to the coffee shop.

Bidgood + Co has also added sweeping colour blocks that riff on the Victoria company’s branding and juxtapose exposed red brick and illustrations commissioned from Brighton-based illustrator Lucy Sherston.
