Fashion’s favourite production designer Alexandre de Betak is auctioning off around 200 objets d’art and design from his former Paris home on 28 March.
The ‘Fellini of Fashion’ has designed over 1,000 spectacular stages during the last 30 years, from a Stanley Kubrick-inspired spaceship for Dior to rustic Warholian barns for Raf Simons.
During that time, de Betak has also amassed an enviable design and art collection, which includes pieces by Ettore Sottsass, Joe Colombo and Gianfranco Frattini, artworks by Marc Cavell and Edison Parra – and a surprising number of Japanese robots.
He and his wife, Argentinean-born art director Sofía Sanchez de Betak, sold their Paris home, and are now set to part ways with its contents at 6pm on 28 March when they go under the hammer at Piasa auction house.
‘I had no more space,’ de Betak told Wallpaper*. ‘I was literally hanging art on the ceiling, which I recommend, actually. But I had done the fun part, the researching, the sourcing, the discovery. I enjoy these aspects more than actually owning.’
Also up for auction are some of de Betak’s own works, such as ‘Gisele’ – a kinetic neon artwork of the Brazilian model created in 2002 – which has an estimate of between €15,000 and €20,000.
The public can get a closer look at the set designer’s diverse collection in the exhibition Alexandre de Betak, My Parisian Interior – Art + Design, which is on view 22-28 March at 118 Rue du Faubourg, Saint-Honore ahead of the auction.
