Banksy has lifted the lid on his Dismaland exhibition in the UK’s Weston-super-Mare.
Described as ‘a festival of art, amusements and entry-level anarchism’, Dismaland gives a dark spin to the conventional theme park and takes over a derelict seafront swimming pool called the Tropicana. It will be open for six weeks, from this Sunday.
‘I loved the Tropicana as a kid, so getting to throw these doors open again is a real honour,’ said Banksy in a tongue-in-cheek statement. ‘I hope everyone from Weston will take the opportunity to once more stand in a puddle of murky water eating cold chips to the sound of crying children.’
Banksy’s park is made up of 18 fairground-style ‘attractions’ featuring work from artists such as Damien Hirst, Jenny Holzer, Jimmy Cauty and David Shrigley.
Within Dismaland’s gates, visitors will find everything from a puppet theatre constructed from the contents of Hackney skips to a dilapidated version of Disney’s ‘Cinderella’s Castle’.
A series of live music and comedy shows will take place on Friday nights, followed by DJs on Saturday nights, who will play until 1am.
Tickets for Dismaland – Banksy’s first UK exhibition since 2009 – are priced at £3 and go on sale tomorrow.
