Towering over the West Sussex countryside is this Grade II* listed Clayton Windmills complex, masterfully converted by architect Sarah Featherstone – and now on the market for £3m.

The pair of windmills, known locally as Jack and Jill, form the axis of Featherstone’s modern interventions. She has integrated the original Victorian structure and its roundhouse with a converted granary and 20th-century modernist millhouse designed for golf broadcaster Henry Longhurst in 1963.

Gleaming, punched aluminium volumes are decorated with a scatter pattern that evokes grain and nods to the site’s roots.

Inside, the kitchen, dining and living room are open plan and lead out onto the garden. Meanwhile, between the mill house and the granary, is a walled courtyard with original timbers. This quiet space leads down to a double-height music room complete with rustic beams and vast glass panels.

The property is for sale through The Modern House and stooped two RIBA awards in 2017, including a Conservation Award.

Though the Jack Windmill is long retired, its companion is still a working mill and is open to the public. Brighton is only seven miles away, while fans of Modernist painters Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant can travel 20 miles to Charleston to visit the former home of the Bloomsbury Group.
