Virgil Abloh: Figures of Speech celebrates the late designer’s career from its new home at the Brooklyn Museum.
Admirers of the artist and designer, who passed away in 2021, have had plenty of opportunities to admire his work up close in the city this year, with the Figures of Speech exhibition coming hot on the heels of another Brooklyn show dedicated to his Nike Air Force 1 collab.
Figures of Speech brings together two decades of the Off-White founder’s work alongside unseen objects from Abloh’s archive. The show includes what the museum is calling a ‘social sculpture’ by the designer – a full-size house complete with a roof and front porch that speaks to Abloh’s early interest in architecture. This will be used to host a programme of events.

Other pieces of work on display at the show, which was first hosted at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, include garments, shoes, moving image work from Off-White shows, furniture, and Louis Vuitton pieces.
Although the exhibition opened posthumously, it retains some of Abloh’s input: the designer began reimagining it for its new Brooklyn location before he died. The show is on display until 29 January 2023.
