Peek inside the new model apartment at Jean Nouvel’s Manhattan tower

Humbert & Poyet’s design shows the property in its best light

The MoMA-adjacent Tour de Verre was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel with the proverbial location, location, location. The 82-story supertall condominium was completed seven years ago with a 65-foot lap pool, a private dining room overlooking Central Park, a squash court, golf simulator and screening room — as well as interior architecture by the late French legend Thierry Despont.

And now it has a 5,772sqft model residence on the 69th floor by Monegasque designers Humbert & Poyet. The a residence caps off a French design trifecta on 53rd Street, expanding on Despont’s museum-quality finishes with art, books and custom furnishings inspired by the world-class museum below.

The north-facing main lounge and dining area sit at the social heart of the apartment, embracing the Central Park exposure. An adjacent bar and library display objects for daily perusal and appreciation, including works sourced through Carpenters Workshop Gallery. They lead to a private office space in the southwest corner. Signature pieces include a bespoke living room sofa and dining table by Philippe Hurel, made-to-measure rugs by Studio Galerie Diurne and Humbert & Poyet’s own collection for Pouenat.

Biarritz-based specialist decorator Atelier de la Torre was enlisted to create custom finishes across the entrance walls, living spaces and kitchen, using a scraped hand-painting technique that catches the light with the brilliance of enamelled ceramic. One wall treatment took artisans two full weeks to complete.

The generous, south-facing primary suite includes its own lounge, dressing area and en suite bath. Anchoring the bed is a bespoke artisanal headboard, handcrafted by Ateliers Tollis with layers of fabric that bring texture and depth to the scheme.

In collaboration with Creative Art Partners, Humbert & Poyet curated an edit of art by Jasper Johns, Raven Halfmoon and Magdalena Shummer-Fangor to help future buyers project themselves into the space.

Along with proximity to Central Park, Rockefeller Center and Carnegie Hall, the Midtown location provides residents with Perpetual Benefactor MoMA memberships.

Units at 53 West 53rd are currently on the market from US$3,200,000, rising to nearly US$65,000,000.
