Beyond the 49th parallel, Canadian modernist architect Ron Thom remains something of a discovery for mid-century aficionados, but in and around Vancouver, his residential designs are a hot—and relatively rare—commodity. That’s why his newly listed 1960 stunner, Dodek House, is causing a stir.
Dodek House, also known as 6821 Laurel St, is named for Mort and Irene Dodek, who commissioned the property in the late 1950s. Thom was a pioneer of West Coast Modern architecture, and went on to receive the Architectural Institute of British Columbia Award of Honour for the home in 1960. The heritage-listed property celebrates a fusion of West Coast Modernism and Japanese influences, showcasing Thom’s reverence for the Bauhaus, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie School, and Japanese architecture.
The five-bedroom, four-bathroom Vancouver property originally featured an L-shaped plan, later expanded to a U-shape that encloses a lush, private courtyard. The interiors (which are also heritage-listed) feature sharp geometries and rich natural materials: the living room includes a colossal brick fireplace and soaring beamed ceilings. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open onto a sunny patio.

Much of the original furniture and built-ins, by master cabinetmaker Joseph Pliss, has been lovingly maintained. Stained glass windows by artist Brian Baxter, custom light fixtures, and an ‘egg crate’ staircase window are among the other highlights, along with beautiful cedar ceilings in the bedrooms.
Some updates have been made, however, including the kitchen, which was replaced in 2001, and the upstairs bathrooms in 2007.
Dodek House was among a cache of Vancouver residences Thom designed while working in the city. He would later go on to design the Massey College master plan for the University of Toronto, the Catherine Parr Traill College master plan at Trent University, and the Shaw Theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Dodek House is for sale through Penny Mitchell PREC* of RE/MAX Masters Realty, who’s listing the 3,243 sq ft South Cambie home for CAD $3.95m.
