This $3.7m modernist Vancouver home has stellar credentials – and incredible views

The architecture firm Thompson Berwick & Pratt defined modern Vancouver for the many decades it operated in the 20th century. Still, it’s rare to see one of its residential projects on the market, and Buckland House, in the Sentinel Hill neighbourhood of West Vancouver, is one of the best.

The cedar-clad hillside home is decidedly Canadian in style — woody and cottage-like yet undeniably modern in its clean lines and purity of function. Designed in 1951 for the family of a forest engineer, it prioritises sweeping views and open, flexible living from expanses of glazing. The post-and-beam structure is deceptively tall — three levels with four bedrooms and four bathrooms across 335 sq m.

Buckland House was built before zoning laws changed across Vancouver, prohibiting the construction of similar houses on the landscape. Its price — CAN$3.699m via Jason Choi of West Coast Modern — reflects this exclusivity.
