Crete’s clifftop wellness resort Acro Suites celebrates the landscape

From its rugged rocky profile to its panoramic sea views

Vertiginous sea views and a raft of stone detailing feature at Crete wellbeing resort Acro Suites which has an effortlessly chilled vibe and a dramatic clifftop location.

The zen Greek hotel was designed by founders and sisters Danae and Konstantina Orfanake, along with local partners, and is named after the Greek word akros/akron, meaning ‘on the edge’. Its rocky surroundings shape its design, too, with a stepped, low-lying profile that echoes the jagged cliff – and sheer views down to the Aegean below.

There are 49 villas and suites at Acro, whose airy rooms feature a pressed cement mortar backdrop warmed by Mount Athos-sourced chestnut wood joinery and metallic accessories. Each room peers out to sea through aluminium-framed windows, and in the Cave suites, carved rock spaces created by Cretan sculptors open to the outside and cocoon private infinity pools.

Wellness is, of course, the focus at the clifftop Crete resort, which starts from £500 per night. Yoga and fitness classes are held at the Asana Yoga Shala building – a pavilion crowned by a vast curving bamboo roof, with sea views providing a motivational backdrop. Post-workout, guests can head to the Bath House, where there’s a Byzantine-style Hamman, Finnish sauna, treatment rooms, two swimming pools, and an extensive spa menu on offer.

Acros’s Nikkei eatery Umi offers elevated, healthy eats. At the same time, its signature restaurant Cremnos puts a new-age spin on authentic Cretan recipes, such as black truffle pastitsio and dumplings saganaki with a smooth bisque sauce, feta cream and ouzo foam. Herb-infused cocktails at the Circle bar are crafted under a Makuti-thatched ceiling, offering sunset views.
