Chanel is covering a classic Brooklyn diner in ice cream shades of pink and green, as part of a perfume launch pop-up event.

Renamed Lucky Diner, the chrome-wrapped building is swapping burgers and coffee for bottles of fragrance, with guests invited to try scents and pose with a giant version of Chanel’s Chance Eau Fraîche.

All of this takes place against a retro diner backdrop, with leather stools, stainless steel and Formica countertops paired with Chanel’s palette of minty green and pastel pink – echoing the colours of the perfume. Vintage neons and signage complete the transformation.

It’s a temporary reprieve for the diner, once known as the Wythe Diner, which faces an uncertain future. Plans are afoot to redevelop its site as an apartment building. Not only is the building a long-time feature of Williamsburg, but it’s one of a bygone generation of prefab diners that swept across America, delivered by road and designed to resemble the original railroad dining cars.

Often bringing life to awkward street corners or empty lots, these original prefabs are gradually disappearing. Lucky Chance also has a limited lifespan: it is only open to the public until 10 September 2023.
