Benjamin Fishstein’s midcentury modern house is for sale in California

Staggered levels and corner glass-to-glass windows give this Oakland midcentury modern house its dramatic look.

The timber-framed, hillside modernist property was built in 1961 by architect Benjamin Fishstein and is perched eerie-like on a forested hill in the Montclair area of the Bay Area city.

The California home is on sale for $1.8m with Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty and comprises three volumes stacked on top of each other in an overlapping diamond plan. Fishstein designed the roof in the shape of an ‘M’ – the first letter of his wife’s name.

Inside, it has exposed structural beams, all-round views of trees and glass walls that meet at angles. Its living spaces and bedrooms unfold around a sweeping staircase with cantilevered timber-slab treads and flow onto a wraparound outdoor deck.
