This San Bernardino A-frame offers modern mountain living

Midcentury monochrome

Modernism meets the great outdoors at this San Bernardino A-frame mountain cabin which ditches rustic for moody monochrome interiors.

The black oak hideaway is listed for $520,000 with Rob Kallick from the Take Sunset team at Compass and is located in the town of Crestline, within the San Bernardino Mountains. It dates from 1961, though the A-frame abode has been freshly updated to integrate old with new, with a floating mid-century chimney adding a zingy pop of colour to the other black-and-white interiors and historic beams accentuated by the crisp paint job.

More colour comes from the outdoors, with leafy woodland views visible through floor-to-ceiling glass in the cabin’s great room, while the kitchen has bespoke black cabinetry and an imported Italian range.

Upstairs is the lofted bedroom, which peeks across the tree canopy, and an all-black bathroom with a spa-like feel and a soaking tub.

The California property is set back from the road, cloaked by mature trees, and is around 70 miles from East Los Angeles. Scenic Lake Gregory Regional Park is much closer – just over a mile from the doorstep.
