This minimalist Montana home is an exercise in recycling – from its salvaged wood interiors to its shipping container shell.

Container house was created by Seattle artist and architect Ty Kelly in 2013, and designed to make the most of the views across the surrounding rolling landscape and the nearby mountains. He welded two containers together to create the home, and rescued unwanted wood (including a bookshelf from an office block set for demolition) to furnish it.

For the past three years the house has been a popular rental property, however its time in Montana may be coming to an end, as one condition of its sale is that it needs to be relocated.

The 700 sq ft space – on the market for $125k via Tom Gierhan (+1 406-222-8700) – has just one bedroom, but the architect’s inclusion of floor-to-ceiling glass makes it feel bigger. A wood burning stove keeps guests warm on cold nights, while timber wall panels add to the cabin-like feel. Sliding doors also open onto a wooden terrace for summer barbecuing.
