Rental of the week: Photographer’s House in Croatia

This cosy cottage in Dalmatia has been reborn from the ruins of a photographer’s studio.

Nikica Karavida was the first and most prominent photographer in the town of Novigrad, and this stone building doubled as his home and studio.

Destroyed by war in the 1990s, the building was left in tatters before artist and designer Boris Kajmak transformed it into a contemporary one-bedroom home last year.

‘Photographer’s House is a space designed for a couple,’ says Kajmak. ‘It is a place which needed to host a level of intimacy, and that determined a lot of my ideas and decisions during renovation.’

Kajmak restored the property’s stone walls and beamed ceilings in line with strict conservation rules for the village, which is home to less than 550 people. He also installed wooden flooring and furnished the two-storey cottage with a mix of vintage and traditional local furniture.

This includes an open-plan bathroom and bedroom, fitted with modern geometric tiling.

As well as being renamed Photographer’s House in Karavida’s honour, the cottage has been hung with prints of his work, doubling as a private gallery space.

‘The story of Nikica Karavida, to whom this house belonged, deserves much more space than the name of the house and his photographs in it, but it’s a start,’ adds Kajmak.

Photographer’s House sleeps two and is available to rent via Urlaubsarchitektur.
