Red and blue strike a cheery tone at South London bakery, hello JoJo

London’s Camberwell has welcomed a bright, new neighbourhood bakery whose friendly name is matched by playful primary interiors contrasting red and blue.

Hello JoJo is located on Camberwell Church Street and is an all-day haunt that goes from daytime bakery and café to evening wine bar and bistro. The London cafe and restaurant is the brainchild of Jo Lavender and Rob Newlan, with vibrant interiors by Michelle Kelly and architecture by Stephen Harty.

The blue and red colour theme is established on the street, with the building’s façade painted baby blue. Arched windows and doors have jaunty, fire-engine red trims, while the restaurant’s name is painted onto a navy backdrop. The three bold shades find their way confidently indoors, where the light blue hue is once again used for the bar top and glossy wall tiles, while crimson shelf hardware and table tops add contrast.

The vibrant combination is subdued by soft, neutral walls, which double as gallery space for a curation of artworks by students at nearby Camberwell Art College.

Of course, hello JoJo is about more than just design: the menu kicks off with baked goods by E5 Bakehouse alumni Jo Garner, including vegan vanilla buns, chocolate rye Swiss rolls and fresh breads. Head chef Will Faris’s evening menu reimagines British classics, like Cornish mussels with leek and lovage sauce and smoked lard, paired with a £6 glass of house wine.
