French fashion and music label Maison Kitsuné has taken cues from the demolished Hotel Okura in Tokyo for its new boutique in the city’s Daikanyama.

Creative directors and founders Gildas Loaëc and Masaya Kuroki designed the store, the brand’s third in the Japanese capital, adopting traditional Japanese crafts and practices.

‘Maison Kitsuné is officially celebrating once again its deep-rooted love for Japan,’ says the label.

The two-storey structure was built using a wooden post and beam construction system and features timber beams, similar to those in Hotel Okura’s former lobby. Bespoke wooden chandeliers illuminate the upper floor of the Daikanyama store while brass clothing racks line one side of the space.

Japanese and Mid-century furniture dot the boutique in another nod to the 1960s hotel. A custom-made ‘noren’ – traditional Japanese fabrics that mark the entrance to a space – covers the store’s front. At the back of the space lies a bamboo forest lies at the back.

To coincide with the opening, Maison Kitsuné has launched a ‘Daikanyama’ capsule collection, also inspired by the Modernist design of Hotel Okura, which is being replaced in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
