Mid-century beach house by Brian Mazlin goes on sale near Sydney

Summer might be over in the northern hemisphere, but things are just starting to heat up Down Under. And this restored 1960s beach house – just an hour’s drive from Sydney – could be just the spot to soak up the sun.

Dubbed Pearl Beach House, the 1,303 sq m property – on the market via Modern House – sits in a tiny coastal hamlet, sandwiched between the sea and the bush.

It was built in 1963 by architect Brian Mazlin and its simple post-and-beam structure nods to the experimental Case Study Houses of California – albeit with an Aussie lilt.

Pearl Beach House’s interior layout went a bit ‘off-piste’ over the years, with the property’s views of Pearl Beach interrupted by the addition of partition walls. In 2010, its current owners enlisted architect Tom Ferguson to restore the mid-century bolt-hole, reconfiguring its upper floor as an open-plan living area, kitchen and dining room complete with floor-to-ceiling glass and views of the beach.

Also on this level is the master bedroom, with two bedrooms tucked on the lower floor beside utility rooms and a family bathroom.
