John Lautner’s hillside Los Angeles home is for sale

A midcentury time capsule designed for his family

Fans of John Lautner can now buy the architect’s very own home, located in Los Angeles and listed for $1.59m.

The hillside Silver Lake property was completed in 1940 and bears all the hallmarks of Lautner’s time working with Frank Lloyd Wright. It is arranged across three levels, and the three-bedroom home is built into a sloping hillside, making the most of its elevated vantage point with wraparound windows.

Some of the modernist property’s original features are intact, including built-in furniture and a fireplace in the main living space. Wood panelling and red tiling runs throughout the Los Angeles home, lending it a sense of warmth.

This marks the first time the midcentury modern home has been up for sale in 40 years, and the home – listed with Crosby Doe Associates – is well preserved, but in need of a little TLC.
