Architect Nicolas del Rio has put a South American twist on the Alpine chalet for his retreat in the foothills of the Andes in Chile.
La Dacha – available to rent via Off Grid Hideaways from $450 per night – unfurls across 1,500 sq ft, and the mountain retreat sits between ancient oak trees and lava rocks in Valle Las Trancas. Del Rio built the three-bedroom Chilean holiday home using passive techniques and has wrapped it in charred pine cladding to protect it from the harshest elements.

Huge picture windows offer vistas across the frozen landscape, while interiors hone a rustic vibe via timber-panelled walls and furnishings sourced from around the architect’s travels.
Shared living spaces are sandwiched in the middle of the three-storey cabin, which is a launchpad for mountain biking trails, riding, hiking and skiing. Warm up around the tiled masonry stove after a day on the slopes.
