In Cornwall, a converted schoolhouse offers a world of possibility

True Love Studio has renovated the 250-year-old building as a contemporary home with soaring proportions

This Cornish property is a blank canvas—yet steeped in over 250 years of history. The former schoolhouse dates from the 1750s and has been extensively renovated and extended to create a serene, white-washed home that retains original stonework and soaring proportions.

True Love Studio designed the 3,200 sq ft property in the western Cornish hamlet of Sancreed, about three miles from Penzance, and has given it a top-to-toe overhaul, renovating, replumbing, rewiring and insulating the converted school for its new role.

The old school entrance leads into the ground floor and the spectacular double-height, vaulted living room. Douglas fir floorboards, arched windows and a vast open-plan space showcase the building’s dramatic proportions, with the kitchen tucked in one corner and glazed doors leading directly onto the garden beyond.

The chalky-white colour palette extends to the front of the building where there’s a bedroom, utilities and a plant room, as well as a second living room with exposed stonework.

Timber stairs access the upper floor with four double bedrooms, each with views of the surrounding farmland and gardens, including the original school playground – a reminder of the building’s past.

The converted Cornish schoolhouse is for sale via The Modern House for £1.5m. This sensitive restoration pairs heritage charm with modern comfort, offering a ready-made rural retreat.
