Greta Garbo’s former New York apartment has hit the market for $7.25m

Home to the silver screen legend for 40 years, Greta Garbo’s East Side apartment is up for sale – and it still has all the hallmarks of Hollywood glamour.

Located on East 52nd Street, the three-bedroom Manhattan property overlooks the city’s East River – supposedly loved by Garbo for reminding her of Stockholm, where she was born. The fifth-floor residence inhabits the exclusive, 15-apartment Campanile co-op building.

Although the kitchen has been gutted and updated, the rest of the home bears the traces of a bygone era of Hollywood. Wooden panelling, grand pink window drapes and a gas fireplace surrounded by built-in bookcases lend the home a stately feel, emphasised by the current owner’s choice of furniture.

Some of Garbo’s original interior choices also remain intact, including the pink silk wall coverings and headboard in the master bedroom. Compass and Corcoran share the $.7.25m listing – which is notably lower than the $8.5m the apartment changed hands for in 2017.
