Echoes of Paris’s Belle Epoque still resonate at Hôtel des Académies et des Arts

Montparnasse’s artistic essence is revived at this Paris hotel, which invites guests to start the day with a coffee and a spot of drawing and painting.

Hôtel des Académies et des Arts inhabits an 18th-century building in the capital’s Rue de la Grande Chaumière, which has been totally redesigned by Studio Lizée-Hugot. The hotel is across the road from a prominent and historic art school, which counts the likes of Serge Gainsbourg and Eileen Gray among its former students.

The artistic atmosphere of Montparnasse is very much evident in the studio’s interior design. Not a single piece of furniture or artwork is off-the-shelf; every object was designed and made for the hotel, from mirrors and lights to tables and decorative pieces.

Guests enter a space that feels more like an artist’s studio home than a hotel, with paintings left unframed and propped up on the floor, sketches dotted about, and even paint splatters marking the furniture. Ceilings are also home to hand-drawn murals.

As well as soaking up the creative atmosphere, guests take breakfast in the hotel’s ‘workshop cafe’, where they can enjoy freshly baked pastries as they sketch. Those that want to develop their skills can join courses hosted by the nearby Académie de la Grande Chaumière.

Meanwhile, rooms at the Paris hotel start from €170 per night.
