Completed in 1946 for the artist and film art director Mischa Kallis, the Kallis-Sharlin Residence is a late work by Rudolph Schindler that demonstrates his precise response to terrain. Set into a steep hillside at 3580 Multiview Drive, the house extends laterally across the slope, with layered terraces and glazing oriented toward the San Fernando Valley. A butterfly roof introduces clerestory light, while shifting volumes negotiate grade without flattening it. The four-bedroom, three-bathroom residence is listed for $6,995,000 with Carolwood Estates.

Across 3,549 square feet, Schindler’s material palette remains intact — mahogany and Douglas fir line walls, ceilings and built-in furnishings, lending continuity between structure and joinery. Grape-stake cladding wraps portions of the exterior, softening the building’s edges within its wooded setting. Four fireplaces anchor principal rooms, alongside a pool and jacuzzi, private bocce court, steam shower and mahogany soaking tub.
The house underwent a multi-year restoration between 2017 and 2022 in collaboration with Barbara Bestor and Jeff Fink. And it’s now known for its designation: Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No.860.
