This former church in Alsace is blessed with divine stained glass

The Jacques Couëlle hearth is another virtue

Built around a sculptural fireplace by French artist and architect Jacques Couëlle, this 500sqm house occupies a former ecclesiastical site in the Alsatian wine village of Andlau. Positioned beside the former monastic precinct and the Abbaye Sainte-Richarde, the property forms part of one of the most historic stretches of the Alsace Wine Route. It’s listed with a guide price of €642,000.

The house is arranged across multiple levels connected by a spiral staircase that wraps around the central fireplace and chimney structure. Stone floors, exposed timber framing, leaded windows and vaulted rooms remain throughout, reflecting the building’s long history and successive adaptations.

Accommodation includes five bedrooms and an independent apartment distributed across the upper floors. A number of reception rooms occupy the main levels, while a library, sauna and an indoor swimming pool concealed beneath a movable floor introduce more unexpected elements. When covered, the pool area can be used as additional floor space.

Access to the property is through a historic carriage entrance leading to an enclosed garden bordered by stone walls. Beyond the principal living spaces are ancillary rooms and storage areas spread throughout the building’s substantial footprint.

Today, the house remains closely tied to Andlau’s historic centre, occupying a site shaped by centuries of religious and residential use.
