‘Stacked’ Brighton house by John Pardey lists for £2.25m

Award-winning practice John Pardey Architects designed this contemporary Brighton property as a series of ‘stacked’ volumes on a hillside above the English seaside city.

The three-storey home – one of three buildings by the practice nominated for a RIBA South East 2017 Award – is for sale via Aucoot at £2.25m and features an ‘upside down’ layout that makes the most of its views across the city and South Downs. Its top floor houses the kitchen and living room – complete with wood burning stone and brick chimney – and leads out onto a decked area.

‘[Our] brief was to create a high quality, contemporary home without recourse to the rather clichéd zinc roof and white rendered modernist designs not uncommon in Brighton,’ says the practice. Instead, pale brick walls and timber evoke the spirit of Danish Modernism.

On the middle floor of the house, set at street level, is a second living room with lofty 11-ft ceilings, as well as the master and second bedroom.

Three more bedrooms are tucked on the lowest level, with each floor connected by a steel and timber-slatted staircase which rises through the height of the 4,680 sq ft Brighton property.
