Own this homage to Louis Kahn in a Vancouver forest

Designed by James KM Cheng, the six-bed house has double-height ceilings and parkland views

Vancouver urban design practice James KM Cheng is the mastermind behind Peninsula House, a modernist villa on a forested plot in North Vancouver.

Built for a Hong Kong family, the three-storey block pays tribute to the architect’s professional hero, Louis Kahn. Its simple cedar-clad volumes open into vaulted, wide-open spaces differentiated by dips, voids and bridges.

Wood-trimmed walls interspersed with panels of concrete straddle the 350 square metres, with views into the tree canopy through banks of glass. There are six private bedrooms and four bathrooms in all.

The house was awarded Record House status in 1977 by the Architectural Record. It’s now available for sale through West Coast Modern for CAN$3,125,000.
