Modernist fixer-upper by Kem Weber hits the market for $835k

Looking for a renovation project to sink your teeth into? This Modernist Californian property by Kem Weber needs a hearty dose of TLC to return it to its former glory, but it’s got strong bones…

The Wedermeyer Residence was designed by Weber in 1936 for the head of Pasadena Junior College’s art department, and the Altadena home – on the market via Glenn Gordon of Partners Trust Real Estate Brokerage & Acquisitions for $835,000 – is surprisingly intact.

Rooms inside the three-bedroom dwelling feature large ribbon windows, high ceilings and bespoke cabinetry, as well as Streamline flourishes including curved walls and arches.

Major repair work is needed to modernise the property, but the framework is there and there’s plenty of potential, inspired by the property’s surviving Modernist details.

Weber designed a number of notable Streamline buildings, including the Walt Disney Studios complex in Burbank California, and was a key force in the emergence of Californian Modernism in the early 20th century.

While the Wedermeyer Residence at 2162 Grand Oaks Ave is one of his lesser known works, the boxy two-storey structure bears many hallmarks of his most celebrated projects – albeit on a more intimate scale.
