Set among mature oaks and sycamores in LA’s San Rafael neighbourhood, this 1965 house was designed by So Cal architects Ainsworth, Angel & McClellan, with gardens by landscape architect Kenneth S Nakaba. The design reflects influences from both California modernism and traditional Japanese architecture, combining redwood-lined interiors, travertine floors and expansive walls of glass in a secluded, tree-filled setting.

A suspended walkway leads through the canopy to the entrance, where living spaces unfold across three levels. Original wood-panelled ceilings, built-in joinery and a raised-hearth fireplace remain, while large windows frame views of the surrounding landscape. A wraparound deck extends from the main living areas, creating a strong connection to the gardens.

The primary suite occupies its own private wing, complete with a sitting area and skylit bathroom, while separate guest quarters include a living room, dining space, kitchen and bedroom. Outside, Nakaba’s design encompasses a freeform swimming pool, inset spa and winding garden paths that thread through almost half an acre of densely planted grounds.
Wiig purchased the property in February for US$5.5 million and has now returned it to the market at an $800,000 markup. It’s listed via Maisonre and Christie’s International Real Estate.
