As European ski country gradually balances out its winter offering, the South Tyrol is gaining momentum as an attractive summer destination. Amping up its X-factor is this new all-suite, adults-only hotel between Bolzano and the wine growers of Lake Caldaro. Low-slung and shrouded in glass, the property is cocooned by vineyards, olive groves and the snow-dusted peaks of the Dolomites.
Named for a beloved island villa called Wanda in the owner’s family, Das Wanda is available via The Aficionados and is dressed in mountain greys, earthy mocha and snow whites to capture the special Tyrolian light, all rendered in brushed cement, porphyry stone, oak and hemp linen. The hoteliers have brought in whip-thin furnishings in blond woods and added subtle lighting to supplement the natural glow of summer. Every suite is designed differently, though they share the same solid oak floors, natural stone tiles, Simmons mattresses and entertainment systems by Loewe. Large windows offer sweeping views of the Dolomites from the oversized sofas.

The lifestyle element has been carefully considered here. A farm-to-table breakfast of golden-yolk
eggs, local cheeses, cured meats fresh fruit and yogurt comes with every room reservation and lasts until 11am. After that, guests go with the flow. Hiking paths delve into the nearby forest and up the local mountain, Mendola, which also has a cable car. Vineyards splay out from the property, supplying the bar by the outdoor pool where snacks are served. The indoor pool feels like a modern grotto in dark stone and glass. It leads to a spa area with a steam sauna infused with Kneipp aromatherapy, and hydromassage beds facing the vineyard.
The Dolomites hotel has partnered with neighbouring restaurants to offer guests options for the evenings, from rustic to fine dining. It’s all so warm and relaxed, it’ll make you want to stay until winter.
