Can’t commit to a kitchen? Concerned about your environmental footprint? Ikea is here to help. The Swedish retail giant is rolling out a new initiative offering customers the chance to lease furniture.

Starting in Switzerland this month, the trial will initially focus on business customers and centre on office furniture. But the plan is to expand the offer to individual consumers and their personal needs.

‘We will work together with partners so you can actually lease your furniture. When that leasing period is over, you hand it back and you might lease something else,’ Torbjorn Loof, chief executive of Inter Ikea, told the Financial Times. ‘You could say leasing is another way of financing a kitchen.’

The strategy is in line with Ikea’s stated aim of creating a ‘circular business model’ and drastically reducing its overall climate footprint. The company also told the Guardian it aims to source 100% of its wood and paper from sustainable sources by 2020 and to ditch fossil fuels by 2030.
