Hong Kong’s Artifact Bar is a sci-fi reimagining of the classic speakeasy

It might be tucked away inside an office tower, but this Hong Kong cocktail bar is designed to feel like a secret, subterranean space with sci-fi bones.

Design studio Nelson Chow oversaw Artifact’s interiors, borrowing the ‘rhythmic patterns and surreal geometry found in underground cisterns’ as the starting point for his interventions.

Curved edges and glowing light has been used to great effect across the lounge, with the interiors made up of largely bespoke elements – including bone-coloured leather booths that look like they’ve emerged organically from the walls, their shape reminiscent of vertebrae.

In place of windows, the design team has created illuminated ‘apertures’ and installed glowing lamps that lend tables a sense of intimacy. A mirrored ceiling stretches overhead, punctuated by unusual, rib-like ceiling beams.

Artifact is located in Basehall in Jardine House, and serves a list of classic cocktails made with aged spirits, as well as oysters and caviar. Take a look at the bar’s futuristic interiors in the gallery above.
