Holiday home of the week: a minimalist retreat in Mexico’s Baja California

Costa Azul House puts a minimalist spin on the traditional Mexican beach home.

Designed by award-winning Canadian practice Campos Leckie Studio in 2014, the Baja holiday rental in San Jose del Cabo is a pristine white concrete volume that perches on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

‘It is a study in contrasts,’ says the practice. ‘A balance of intense sunlight and shade, and the need for private and shared spaces where strangers can feel comfortable under the same roof.’

Costa Azul House – available to rent via Boutique Homes – was designed for entertaining. The two-bedroom property has several entrances and walled-in staircases that allow guests to move through its volumes without disruption, and the upstairs guest bedroom can be accessed without entering the house. Meanwhile, a ribbon-like wall encloses the house, adding to its feeling of seclusion.

The white theme continues inside the house, but its volumes are soften by polished concrete floors, dark wood cabinetry and the use of decorative Mexican tiles.

A dose of colour comes from the outdoors: every room opens onto a private courtyard at the heart of the 2,000 sq ft property, which has an aqua blue swimming pool as its centrepiece.

San Jose del Cabo is right at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula – notable for its sandy white beaches and quality surfing. Guests at the house must be willing to share with its year-round resident… Zelda the cat.
