Baumhaus is a grand Porto residence with a modern design twist

Located a 15-minutes walk from the historic centre of Porto, this townhouse contrasts period elements with sleek interiors.

Soaring ceilings and vast windows ensure the eight apartments contained within the home are flooded with natural light. Although the owners describe Baumhaus as a ‘19th century bourgeois residence’, they’ve filled it with pieces of contemporary design – think slick cabinets, Eames elephants and powder-coated steel furniture. Every new addition to the townhouse has been carefully chosen to preserve the property’s historic backdrop.

Guests heading to the upper levels pass beneath a domed skylight and find the third-floor studio which has its own rooftop shelter. The apartment on the first floor retains its original stucco ceiling, while the basement contains another studio that opens straight onto the garden.

All the apartments include access to the Baumhaus backyard, which is home to a 100-year-old cedar tree, as well as a collection of aromatic herbs that can be used in the kitchen. Guests can also request yoga sessions in the sunny garden, as well as food workshops. Apartments start at €130 per night via Welcome Beyond.
