An award-winning gabled farmhouse by Rick Joy lists for $9.75m

Rural architecture that’s rooted in modernism

American architect Rick Joy puts a modern spin on rural Vermont’s gabled forms with his award-winning Woodstock farm – now on the market for $9.75m.

The sprawling 200-acre countryside idyll scooped the 2010 title of Architectural Record’s ‘House of the Year’ for its sleek, simple gabled volumes, built with materials typical to the area. A 3,890 sq ft shingle and silvery stone house has glazed panes that wrap across the wall and ceiling, flooding the interior with light.

Rustic timber floors and walls have a contemporary feel thanks to contrasting black steel bents, which exaggerate the length of the property by framing sight-lines.

A stone’s throw from the four-bedroom Vermont property is a 5,625 sq ft cedar-shingled barn which houses a garage, basketball court, storage and guest accommodation. Its tawny volume reflects in the adjacent pond, highlighting the clean geometry of Joy’s clever architectural ensemble.

Woodstock Farm is listed via the Occom Group, Four Seasons Sotheby’s International Realty. Take a spin inside.
