Refurbished Charleston mansion blends Victorian grandeur and minimalism

Original glass and decorations pop against sleek new finishes

In Charleston, South Carolina, this 168-year-old house effortlessly blends historic features with contemporary additions.

Wilden-Hirsch house cuts a dramatic figure, with stained glass windows and a wrought iron bannister leading up to its front door. The grand property occupies a corner lot in Harleston Village – the historic downtown – which gives the many decorative elements of its facade space to shine.

The seven-bedroom house is listed for $4.5m with Maison Real Estate and is fresh from an eight-month renovation, although its grand foyer staircase, hardwood floors, stag window, and fireplaces remain untouched. Freshly whitewashed walls offer a clean canvas for new owners to work with, while the kitchen and five bathrooms have been updated with new appliances, including a playful pop of purple in the former.

Other features include soaring 13-ft-high ceilings, leaded-glass windows, decorative fixtures, and an imposing brick fireplace in the games room turned den. The garden has transformed, too, with a palm tree-lined saltwater swimming pool offering a tropical sanctuary.
