Volcanic views and gorilla-trekking are on offer at Rwanda’s Singita Kwitonda Lodge

Surrounded by high-altitude jungle

Nestled at the foothills of Rwanda’s Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura volcanoes, the Singita Kwitonda Lodge combines sustainability with Rwandan design.

The boutique safari lodge is the latest addition to Singita’s roster of conservation focussed eco-hotels. It takes its name from local celebrity, Kwitonda – a silver-back gorilla that inhabits the 178 acres of high-altitude forest on the edge of the Volcanoes National Park.

Singita Kwitonda Lodge is constructed with materials mostly from the Musanze district and boasts energy harvesting and water-collection systems that bolster its eco-credentials.

The lodge comprises just eight suites, with rooms adapting to the jungle setting via covered verandas, indoor and outdoor showers, soaking tubs and a heated plunge pool. Interiors are decked with natural materials, such as woven ceilings and timber furniture. A moody colour palette of lava black and fiery oranges nods to the surroundings, with objects, furnishings, and patterned fabrics by African artisans.

Larger groups can also check into the four-bedroom Kataza House, which includes a private chef, gym, swimming pool and media room.

Volcanic pathways connect rooms to the main lodge, where there is a bar and restaurant and spa facilities for unwinding after a long day of gorilla-trekking.

Rates for Singita Kwitonda Lodge start from £1,200 per person per night (and around £1,164 per gorilla trekking permit) via The Luxury Safari Company.
