Charlestonians are used to restaurant openings, and the arrival of fine local fare has oft been recognised, but the location of the city’s latest gastro-launch, Merci, might be the loveliest in memory.
A debut from the Charleston-based couple Michael and Courtney Zentner, the 26-seat bistro occupies a weathered 1820s Federal-style townhouse in Charleston Village. The elegantly peeling facade opens to a creamy-white interior complemented by rosy wood panelling and black accents. Banquettes in the corners are covered with natural linens and lit softly from table lamps.
The couple worked with Helen Rice of Serious Buildings on the interiors, and Courtney, a stylist by trade, filled in the gaps with thoughtful antiques, art and greenery. Michael works the kitchen, using Lowcountry produce to refine meaty French and Italian dishes.
The Charleston restaurant is surrounded by the sort of clapboard streetscape that makes a post-dinner walk a joy. A second location, Petit Merci, serves fresh market produce, bread and homemade soups next door.
